Blood on the River: James Town 1607 by Elisa Carbone

Posted by Laura Losch on August 28, 2009

Hi Everybody! This is the first of many book reviews I will post this year. All the book reviews I post are always books that I’ve read and enjoyed (or maybe not)!

Blood on the River: James Town 1607 by Elisa Carbone

I know, the name of the book sounds kind of scary, boring, and really serious, but this is a wonderful book! It’s the classic story of the English coming to America in search of spices and gold and whatever else they were hoping to find, BUT this book is from the viewpoint of Captain John Smith’s page Samuel (or personal helper). Does everyone remember Captain John Smith? He’s from the famous Pocahontas story (by the way she shows up in this story as well). Samuel is an orphan who is lucky enough to be picked to travel with the Englishmen to The New World (better known to us as the United States :) ). Some of Samuel’s stories are funny and others are scary! The long boat ride over that he describes sound just plain old awful! But Samuel’s view of all the adults fighting over their resources in the newly created Jamestown is priceless! And we also get to see Samuel’s view of the savages (better known to us as Native Americans :) ). But if you remember anything about the story of Jamestown, you’ll remember things go terribly wrong and the Englishmen do not come prepared for winter. You’ll have to read to find out what happens and if Samuel makes it through this historic journey. . . . . available now in the media center!

Get your geek on. . . .

Posted by Laura Losch on August 18, 2009

As you change for connections or walk to lunch, check out our new bulletin board across from the media center. Geek the library! This bulletin board reminds us all that we need to support not only our media center here at South Hall, but all public libraries as well. Check out Geek the Library for more information. Many public libraries are cutting hours or even closing down due to the economy! Make sure you’re being a good citizen and patron and stop by your local library!

Now, this bulletin board needs your help! I want to know what sport, book, subject, or item YOU geek! Stop by the media center for a special marker and write on the board what you geek. Here are some pictures of the board and some sample “geek” items from some of the teachers.

Up and Running. . .

Posted by Laura Losch on August 16, 2009

The media center is officially open! We had all the 6th graders come through on Thursday and Friday to get acquainted and now we’re ready to be open to the rest of the school body.

As we start the year there is one change you need to be aware of: You must go by your homeroom first before coming to the media center during zero period. Your homeroom teacher must sign your  agenda in order to visit the media center during zero period. No signed agenda = no entrance into the media center.

Keep in mind I will be forming a Reading Bowl Team in November! If you’re interested you can start reading our list of books now! See Mrs. Losch for some of the selected books!

On a personal note: For those of you who haven’t heard, I’m having a baby! So you can enjoy watching my belly grow throughout the school year.

Here are some first photos of 6th graders enjoying the new facilities:

See you in the library soon!
