Reading Bowl Competition Success!

Posted by Laura Losch on February 9, 2010

This past Saturday, February 6th, the South Hall Reading Bowl Team traveled to Pickens County Middle School to compete in the North Regional Reading Bowl. Even though we didn’t place, we still had lots of fun and enjoyed the day! Here are some pictures:

And if this looks fun to you – please consider joining us next year. Most of my team this year was 8th graders, which means they will be leaving me and heading up to Johnson next year. SO I need new team members! Let me know if you would like to join and I can go ahead and give a few of the books for next year and you can look them over during the summer.

See you in the library! 🙂

Reading Bowl Meeting Today!

Posted by Laura Losch on November 11, 2009

Today is the first meeting of the South Hall Middle Reading Bowl Team. It will be right after school in the media center until 4:30 p.m.  I hope many of you attend! We have a great selection of books to read this year and as always competition day will be fun, fun, fun!!! If you can’t make it today please stop by the media center and talk to me because it’s not too late to join!

I also want to take this time today to honor all our Veterans here in the United States. Today is Veterans Day. Did you know that as of 2007 we had 23.6 million military Veterans in the United States? Please take a moment to stop by The Youth Act Club’s wonderful Veterans bulletin board down by the cafeteria. It displays many relatives of teachers here at South Hall who are Veterans. It also has one special teacher on the board – Dr. Evans!!

See you in the library soon! 🙂

Reading Bowl Team 2009-2010

Posted by Laura Losch on September 8, 2009

For those of you who haven’t heard, I sponsor a Reading Bowl Team here at South Hall Middle. What’s a Reading Bowl Team you say? Well, just about the coolest club in school, that’s what! 🙂

The Reading Bowl Team doesn’t gear up until November, but I wanted to alert everyone about it now, because you can start participating today! The Reading Bowl Team reads books from a selected list of 20 books (they happen to be the Georgia Children’s Book Award Nominees) and we answer quiz-like questions about the books (think Jeopardy). BUT don’t fear people! You do not have to read all 20 books to be a member of the team. I just ask that you read 8 of the books between now and February 2010. At each meeting, which will be Wednesdays after school beginning in November, I will ask you quiz questions and we will practice using quiz buzzers. In February 2010, on a Saturday, we will travel to Pickens Co. Middle School and compete against other middle schools on the same books. This is why we practice beforehand, so we can be the best!

We have lots of fun on that day. I buy everyone a t-shirt to wear and we go out to lunch after the competition. So, if this sounds like something your interested in – don’t wait! Stop by the library and start checking out the Reading Bowl books now. These special books sit in a special place in the media center, so please ask me where they are and I’ll show you. I’ve already read 7 of them and they have all been great! That another great thing about Reading Bowl Team, the books are always wonderful books. Here’s some of the titles:

Uprising by Maragret Haddix

Bearwalker by Joseph Bruchac

Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis

Deep, Dark and Dangerous by Mary Hahn

The Sorta Sisters by Adrian Fogelin

See you in the library!

Reading Bowl Team Competition

Posted by Laura Losch on February 8, 2009

Well Saturday was the big day! The Reading Bowl Team went to competition in Pickens County. All our hard work since October 2008 led up to this event —– and we won a trophy. . . . . . . . . for participation! 🙂   But we all agreed that it was okay. Our South Hall Team knew many of the answers to the questions, but several experienced teams were quicker on their buzzers than we were. But for being a first-year start-up team, we did AWESOME!!! I want to commend: Dilan, Adam, Brittanie, Clarissa, Anna, and Ashley on a job well done! I really enjoyed our day together! Check out some pictures:

Reading Bowl Team

Posted by Laura Losch on September 24, 2008

Just a reminder to everyone who would like to join the inaugural South Hall Middle Reading Bowl Team, our first meeting will be next Thursday, October 2nd in the media center immediately after second bus load. Please make sure you have a ride home at 4:30. At this first meeting we will discuss what’s expected of you as a member of the Reading Bowl Team and how competition will be in February 2009.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the awesome readers out there next Thursday! I know several of you are already reading the selected Reading Bowl books – so I know I won’t be alone at the meeting! 🙂

P.S. I’m getting snacks for you so you won’t starve after school!! 🙂
