More Poems!!

Posted by Laura Losch on April 28, 2009

Here are two funny poems. . . .

Home Sick

-Kristine O’Connell George

Here I am at home

feeling sick, throwing up,

sipping soda,

a whole day

to myself,

and I’m feeling. . . .

homesick

for school?

Swimming ‘Ool

-Kenn Nesbitt

Swimming in the swimming pool

is where I like to “B,

wearing underwater goggles,

so that I can “C”.

Yesterday, before I swam

I drank a cup of “T”.

Now the pool’s a “swimming ool”

because I took a “P”.

Can’t wait for Thursday!!! See you in the library!

A Poem for the Day

Posted by Laura Losch on April 26, 2009

As I putter around in the garden today – thinking it’s Sunday and we’re back to school tomorrow, I thought a school poem would be appropriate for today as we adjust our schedules back to “school time”. Shoot me a comment and let me know what you think. . .

School Life

© Cheryl Theseira

School is a daily routine for us
In the morning, we’re sure to make a fuss
Even when the sun is still not up,
Here we are, awake at 6am sharp

We feel that school is such a bore
We feel that school is such a chore
Parents say, “School’s great! Now, go!”
We say, “Well, what do you know?”

Late a minute and we have to run
Eyes half open, shoelaces undone
We reach school and we see our friends,
Immediately, the torture ends

We have a chat and go with the flow
Then the bell rings, it is time to go
We may at times find school stressful
To have some fun, we have to bend some rules

Talk back to teachers, and detention we serve
No doubt, it is sometimes what we deserve
Sometimes they are as cold as ice
And other times they’re actually really nice

They teach us and give us a helping hand
They’re forever ready to listen and be a friend
They have built much confidence in us
Just not when they are being really harsh

Over the years of education,
Never have we had so much learning with action
Such as camps, experiments, concerts and activities
We’ve learnt so much and even saved the trees

A wise teacher once said aloud –
Success is failure turned inside out
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit

Some may see school as a torture chamber
Some cannot wait for the holidays in December
But it depends on how we look at school
Honestly, positively, school is cool!

See you in the library! And be on the lookout April 30th for the Poetry Patrol! 🙂

Poem in Your Pocket Day – April 30th

Posted by Laura Losch on April 22, 2009

As if I didn’t have enough planned for April 30th, we are going to add another layer to our day-long celebration! Poem in Your Pocket Day!

The morning of April 30th the Youth Act Club and I will be handing out pocket-sized poems (in English and Spanish!) when you enter the school in the connections hall. Keep the poem in your pocket all day – read it to a friend – share it with your teacher – BUT always keep it in your pocket.

I, Mrs. Losch, will be on “Poetry Patrol” throughout the day on April 30th. That means if I approach you during class change, in the lunchroom, or in your class and I ask you to show me your poem (it must be in your pocket) and you have it – you will win a special treat from me! I hope to get every student involved!

I may even “Poetry Patrol” some of the teachers – just to keep them on their toes!

Here’s what the poems will look like on the front – the actual poem will be printed on the back.

I can hardly wait!!! Be on the look out for the “Poetry Patrol” on April 30th!

See you in the library!

Happy Earth Day!

Posted by Laura Losch on April 22, 2009

That’s right today is EARTH DAY!! And it’s going to be a beauty – nice and warm!

For those of you who know me well, you know I love to garden and just “play in the dirt”. So I encourage everyone today to get outdoors and do something fun – plant a tree, clean up trash on your street, pick up doggie-do – I don’t know – anything that will help our beautiful Earth. And if you don’t feel like getting out – stay indoors and try to save energy – even a small savings of energy will help our planet in more ways than you’ll know!

Check out the Google logo today – too cute!

Get out and do something good today! Happy Earth Day!

See you in the library!

Robyn Hood Black is coming!!!!

Posted by Laura Losch on April 21, 2009

On April 30th in the media center, we will be honored to have Robyn Hood Black come and speak to the 6th graders about her cool book Wolves!

Robyn Hood Black often volunteers at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve (as in the picture below) and LOVES hanging out with the wolves! And too cool is a link on her website to the International Wolf Center Exhibit Pack in Minnesota. They have a wolf cam!!! Click on this link and see if you can spot any wolves! Too cool!! (They were just lounging on rocks when I checked them last)

I also want to share a great opportunity for everyone while Robyn Hood Black is here at South Hall. She will be selling her book Wolves for only $20! And she will sign your book for you  if you purchase one while she’s here! How cool – an opportunity to have a signed book by the author herself! See me in the media center if you want to pre-pay for your book. She’s also donating some of the money from the book sales to our own media center!!!

So get ready – get your wolf growling voice ready – and on April 30th we will get a treat!

Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis

Posted by Laura Losch on April 21, 2009

I’ve just finished another 2009-2010 Reading Bowl book, Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis. He wrote some other great books like The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 and Bud, Not Buddy. This particular book is already winning awards – it is a Newbery Honor Book and won the Coretta Scott King Award, so right off the bat you know this book is going to be good.

When I looked at the cover, I’ll admit it, I thought – not another slave-trying-to-get-free story!! BUT I was happy to learn that this story is about Elijah, a free born boy living in Canada. The first half of this book follows Elijah through his daily life: dealing with his former-slave parents, his nutty best friend, a man called “Preacher” who doesn’t act like a preacher, being called fragile because he cries sometimes, and more. But the story takes a turn when “Preacher” steals Mr. Leroy’s money and runs off into America. Elijah ends up being the boy Mr. Leroy turns to for help. But what does a free born boy know about America? And what if a slave catcher gets Elijah? He’s free born, so he doesn’t have any proper papers. Read and find out. . . .

Great book! Highly recommended!

The Very Ordered Existence of Merilee Marvelous

Posted by Laura Losch on April 7, 2009

I just finished another book on next year’s Reading Bowl Team book list. This book, The Very Ordered Existence of Merilee Marvelous by Suzanne Crowley is wonderful!!

A great story about Merilee, who the author never actually says, but has some sort of mental challenge. The book is written from her point of view and I did not get the sense that she had autism; she just has some sort of mental challenge that the author never lets the reader know. But it doesn’t matter because life from Merilee’s eyes is hilarious and wonderful!

Because Merilee doesn’t talk much, most of the small town of Jumbo, Texas, tells her their deepest, darkest secrets. It’s not until a lonely poet, Jack O’Connor and his half-Indian son Biswick come into town that Merilee’s life gets turned upside down! I couldn’t believe some of the things that happened in this book! If you’re looking for a good read over this break – check out The Very Ordered Existence of Merilee Marvelous!
